Trailer Time!

Our production of Andrew Lippa’s THE WILD PARTY opens on Thursday, and we’re very excited to open the doors and invite you in for a night of sex, violence, sin and gin. And no self-respecting party can get off to a solid start without a little good old fashioned warm-up. It’s what the kids these days call a “pre-game.” So here it is: Another dynamite trailer by Renegade’s film director, Matt Helbacka. Enjoy, and see you Thursday at 8pm!

Is It The Weekend Yet?

We here at Renegade Theater Company love the weekend. It’s when all the fun stuff happens. Take this weekend for instance. On Thursday at 8pm we’re opening our production of Andrew Lippa’s THE WILD PARTY. After that, we’re celebrating in style with a an after-party brought to you by our friends at the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe.

And then, of course we’ve got Renegade Improv Friday and Saturday at 10:30, plus performances of THE WILD PARTY on Friday and Saturday at 8pm. And then on Sunday there’s a new episode of “Breaking Bad.” So, our weekend is all set.

See you there.

Wild Party Pics!

We’re less than a week away from the opening night of our final musical production of the season, Andrew Lippa’s THE WILD PARTY! While we put the finishing touches on this delightfully sinful party, we thought we’d share some promotional pics taken by Renegade’s fantastic staff photographer, Andy Miller.

What a lovely quartet. They look so innocent and happy. Maybe this show’s title is a little misleading. They don’t seem very wild or dangerous.

Oops, looks like things are getting a little bit naughty. But, not like evil. And not even THAT naughty, not if you went to college. Although, what’s Evan up to?

Oh, there we go, now the title makes more sense. Evan looks like he’s about to kill us. And that clown nose is his, too. That’s right he’s an evil clown. Pretty much the worst thing in the world. You ever seen “It?” Yeah, exactly.

Let’s quickly move past that last image before the little girls from “The Shining” show up and remind you all that ADAM SIPPOLA is playing a FREE improvisational music set tonight at 8pm in the Teatro Zuccone lobby, which will be followed at 10:30 pm by Renegade Improv on the mainstage for only $5. See you there … or Evan will find you.

Musicians Wanted!

Do you play an instrument? Well, good for you! Frigging braggart.

Wait … let’s try that again.

Do you play an instrument? Want to get paid to play it and hang out with some cool people? Our upcoming production of THE WILD PARTY needs the following musicians:

  • Trumpet player
  • 2 Reed players
  • Guitarist
  • Bassist

If you or anyone you know might be interested in playing some sweet jazz / rock / pop music while earning some cash and having some fun, please contact Artistic Director Katy Helbacka at katyhelbacka@gmail.com.

Things You Don’t Know About The Wild Party

FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT
“THE WILD PARTY”

  1. It was based off of a book-length poem written by Joseph Moncure March in 1926, and it took him two years to find a publisher brave enough to publish it due to its extreme vulgarity and obscene sexual content.
  2. There is another musical of the same name written by Michael John LaChuisa that opened on-broadway only a few months after Lippa’s off-broadway version in February 2000.
  3. Lippa’s version of The Wild Party went through almost a decade of readings and workshops before its premiere, along with a little help from broadway composer Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Wicked).
  4. The original set designer for Lippa’s off-broadway production of The Wild Party, David Gallo, was oddly enough the original set designer for Neil LaBute’s Reasons to Be Pretty which was also part of Renegade’s 2011 season.
  5. The majority of the dialogue in the show preserves the original rhyming couplet structure from March’s 1926 poem.

FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
RENEGADE’S PRODUCTION OF “THE WILD PARTY”

  1. Evan Kelly and Abbey Hegerfeld have mastered a death-defying lift that we have nicknamed “The Woman Drop.”
  2. One the actors has a screaming solo, in which he momentarily takes on the role of “Orgasmic Man.”
  3. One of the songs is entitled Come With Me…and means exactly what you think it does.
  4. We’ve managed to put a claw-foot bathtub, a 1920s upright piano and 16 dancing cast members on the teatro zuccone stage without making it feel claustrophobic.
  5. Renegade’s production opens Thursday, August 4th at 8:00 pm on the Teatro Zuccone stage.

What is THE WILD PARTY?

Andrew Lippa’s THE WILD PARTY opened on February 24, 2000. It’s based on the poem of the same name by Joseph Moncure March, and focuses on one night and one party, thrown by a pair of vaudeville performers and lovers, Queenie and Burrs.

It won the 2000 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical of the 2000 season, Lucille Lortel Awards for Scenic, Costume, and Lighting Design, and the 1999-2000 Obie Award for Best Choreography. It was nominated for twelve additional Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding New Musical.

But we can talk about how great it is, or we can show you. Here are a few numbers from the original off-Broadway production. But watch at your own risk, for here there be spoilers.

…Oh, and one more thing. This show is going to be amazing. And if you want to be a part of it, HERE IS YOUR CHANCE.
