New Works Festival Starts Tonight!

The Northland’s theater scene is booming. Opportunities for local actors, directors and designers abound. But not for the playwright. Each year, dozens of productions are mounted in the region, but rarely are any of these new works by local authors.

Renegade hopes to change that.

Renegade Theater Company is pleased to announce that the following pieces have been selected for the 1st Annual New Works Festival at the Teatro Zuccone, October 13-15, 2011:

Concessions by Johnny Watkins, Directed by Lawrence Lee – October 13th at 8pm.

Pas De Deux by Lee Gundersheimer. Directed by Sabrina Zappa – October 14th at 8pm.

Lena Long Legs by Jessica Lind. Directed by Michelle Juntunen – October 15th at 8pm.

These fantastic world premiere pieces will be read during the New Works Festival, which is open to the public. A suggested donation of $5 is requested, and each reading will be followed by a Q&A session with the cast, director and writer where you will have a hand in shaping these wonderful new dramatic works.

Come out and show your support for original works in your community!

TONS of Updates!

Hello Blog Readers -

It’s been a busy week here at Renegade, and we have a lot to talk about. So settle in, this is going to be a good post.

ONLY THREE MORE SHOWS!

First of all, it’s closing week of CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION!

If you haven’t seen this funny, touching and beautiful show, you’ve only got three more chances. So get your butts down to the Teatro Zuccone this Thursday, Friday or Saturday night at 8pm. Tickets are only $15 for adults and $12 for students/seniors. And be sure to ask the bartender for a “Tequila Transformation,” It’s a Tequila Sunrise for only $5 and it’s only available for the next three days!

This play is barely 18 months old, and we’ve got the Northland premiere. Come out and help support new, bold and challenging work in the region! Renegade Theater Company is honored to present this fantastic new comedy from one of the strongest voices in theater today, and we can only continue to present these types of cutting-edge work with your support. So come show it! Call 218-336-1414 for tickets.

AUDITIONS

Don’t forget that auditions for the first show of our 2012 season, the 8-time Tony Award winner SPRING AWAKENING are this Saturday, October 1st at noon.

You can sign up for a 5-minute audition slot between 12-3pm by contacting Artistic Director Katy Helbacka. You need to prepare two 32-bar contemporary pop or Broadway selections. Callbacks are the same day at 5pm. If called back, come dressed to move, as you will be asked to learn a dance combination.

This is your first chance to be a part of this production, as it’s the Northland premiere. It features a great rock score and excellent parts for both youth and adults. And it’s in February. We don’t know if you realize this, but the surest cure for the winter blues is to be in a musical with the word “spring” in the title. Well, either that or a vacation somewhere tropical. But let’s be honest, we produce theater, we can’t afford vacations!

DINK TANK @ THE MOVIES

Duluth’s only resident sketch comedy team takes over the Zinema for two nights of major motion picture mockery!

Join us as some of the area’s funniest comedians grab a microphone and take over the front row to give a Hollywood blockbuster the ball-busting it so richly deserves. Sit back with a cold beer and try to enjoy the movie with three jerks wise-cracking about it the entire time! They might even fast-forward through your very favorite part. What fun!

First up, THE MATRIX!

Sept 30th & Oct 1st, 2011 @ 9:15 p.m.
Tickets just $10!

Okay … let’s see, was there anything else? The show, the auditions, the movie-thing. No, I think that covers just about everything. Or does it? See, we’ve got one more thing for today’s blog post. A very fun announcement. We’ll let our graphic designer Matt Olin do the announcing work for us with another stellar poster:

Actors and Directors Needed!

Our first annual NEW WORKS FESTIVAL is fast approaching, and we’ve been receiving some wonderful submissions by some very talented local writers. And as we narrow down the selections to the three plays that will be given readings during the festival – October 13-15, 2011 at the Teatro Zuccone – we need volunteers from our community to act and direct these pieces.

The commitment will be light – a few rehearsals and the performance – and you’ll get to be a part of the creative process in a new and dynamic way.

If you’re interested in helping shape and hone new works, we need you! Email Katy Helbacka and join the festival. It promises to be a great time with some very talented people.

Attention Playwrights!

The Northland’s theater scene is booming. Opportunities for local actors, directors and designers abound. But not for the playwright. Each year, dozens of productions are mounted in the region, but rarely are any of these new works by local authors.

Renegade hopes to change that and is now accepting submissions for their FIRST ANNUAL NEW WORKS FESTIVAL!

The submission process is open to all Minnesota and Wisconsin residents. All submissions must be received by September 15th. Submissions can be sent via email to renegadetheatercompany@gmail.com or via mail to:

Renegade Theater Company
222 East Superior Street
Duluth, MN 55802

Note: While we will accept submissions from all residents of Minnesota and Wisconsin, preference will be given to those living within the Duluth/Superior area.

The festival will be held October 13-15, 2011 at the Teatro Zuccone in Downtown Duluth.  Three playwrights will have their pieces worked on by a local cast and director before being presented in a reading or staged reading format during the festival. After each performance, the audience will be invited to stick around and give their feedback to the writer.

So writers, submit your material! And audiences, please come out and help strengthen this crucial part of our artistic community.

Pay What You Can!

Opening night of REASONS TO BE PRETTY is Thursday, June 2nd at 8pm. Stick around after the show for the after party in the Zeitgeist lobby featuring food from the Zeitgeist Cafe and music by Mae Martin. Then, stick around for a FREE Long Form Improv set from the newly formed Long Form Team of Renegade Improv.

And if all that wasn’t enough, opening night is PAY WHAT YOU CAN! Only have $1? That’s fine! Feel like the show is worth $100? We will totally accept!

But come out and celebrate with us. Whatever you decide to pony up to see REASONS TO BE PRETTY also gets you free food and music, plus a free late-night Improv set. Because we think you are all awesome and we like hanging out with you.

Thank You

Happy day after opening, blog readers!

Last night was a truly wonderful night for all of us here at Renegade Theater Company. The 2011 Season Kickoff and Silent Auction was a wonderful time with some wonderful people and raised a lot of money for the company.

And then came show time. And what a blast that was. We’re already dreading that we only get to do this show 8 more times. It’s one of the more powerful, moving evenings of theater we’ve been a part of, and we love sharing it with audiences.

Oh, and since we’re only doing this 8 more times, we suggest you GET YOUR TICKETS now. Like right now. Yesterday would’ve been better. We don’t expect them to last long.

But we would like to say thank you to everyone who came out in support of Renegade last night, and who will do so in the following weeks. Your support means everything to us. You are why we do what we do. You are the most vital part of the company in Renegade Theater Company.

We also need to give a big thank-you to one of our own, Evan Kelly, for setting up and executing the Season Kickoff and Silent Auction. He works really hard for Renegade, and we’re very lucky to have him. Thanks also to the events committee and every volunteer who lent a hand. We love you guys.

Below is our review in this morning’s Duluth News Tribune (which you can also read on their site by CLICKING HERE).
